First Day Back: Broward County Special Olympics Gymnastics

Today, the Broward County Special Olympics gymnastics season officially began, and the moment I walked into the gym, I felt the buzz. Familiar faces lit up as they spotted me, and I couldn’t help but smile as athletes waved, called out my name, and ran over to say hello. Seeing so many of my students from last season return made my heart so full.

Raquel, our amazing head coordinator, gave me a quick rundown of the routines and walked me through the schedule for the day. Then it was time to get moving. I led our group warm-up, guiding the athletes through stretches and dynamic exercises to wake up their muscles and get them ready for practice.

Once warmed up, we jumped into skills from their routines. We split into smaller groups to focus on individual needs. Raquel took five of the Level C female gymnasts, while I worked with Olivia, a bright and determined Level 1 gymnast, and a male gymnast I coached to a state victory last year, now also competing at Level C. Olivia and I went over her floor routine, giving her time to practice independently while I worked closely with the male gymnast on his stick routine, offering tips and celebrating every improvement.

For the next hour, the gym was filled with focus, laughter, and encouragement. We wrapped up with a group cool-down, all seven athletes stretching together, reflecting on the hard work they’d put in.

If today was any indication, this season will be filled with progress, joy, and so many proud moments. Special Olympics gymnastics is back,

and I’m so grateful to be part of it.
