Day 9 of Disability Pride Month: 9 Ways to Make Life More Inclusive

July is Disability Pride Month: a time to celebrate, uplift, and push for inclusion. But accessibility isn’t just ramps or parking spots, it's everyday choices we make to open doors for disabled people in our schools, friend groups, events, and online spaces.

Not sure where to start? Here are 9 simple, powerful ways you can show up today, and every day:

1. Welcome People In, Not Out

Invite disabled friends, teammates, and classmates. Sometimes all it takes is asking someone to join and meaning it.

2. Spread Info About Access

Know an event has ramps, captions, or sign language? Share that. Don’t make people guess if they can get in the door.

3. Slow Down, Listen Up

Give people time to speak, type, sign, or point. Listening fully is free and powerful.

4. Respect Boundaries

Mobility aids, service animals, and medical devices are not community property. Always ask before touching or helping.

5. Amplify Real Stories

Share stories by disabled people, not just about them. Pass the mic. Repost their work. Celebrate their voices.

6. Make Your Content Accessible

Add captions, image descriptions, and clear text. Your videos and posts reach everyone that way, not just some.

7. Be the Friend Who Checks In

Planning something? Ask: “What would make this easier for you?” Inclusion starts with one question.

8. Choose Inclusive Spaces

When you plan an outing, check access first: ramps, restrooms, quiet spots, so no one’s left out at the door.

9. Speak Up, Back Them Up

See a broken ramp, missing captions, or unfair rules? Say something. One voice can spark a fix.

Inclusion is action. These aren’t huge tasks. Make small shifts in how we invite, plan, share, and speak up. When you choose access, you say“You belong here, exactly as you are.”

Ready to start? Pick one. Do it. Teach it. Share it.

Happy Disability Pride Month! Here's to open doors, louder voices, and true belonging for all.
